Exhibition Loss to Barrie Sharks

Mar 26th vs Barrie - L 3-2
The ESS Golden Hawks played their first game in 3 weeks against the Barrie Sharks. It was an exhibition tune-up for the final tournament of the season. The rust showed early as, Barrie outshot the Hawks 8-1 in the first period, and took a 1-0 lead. However the Hawks battled back in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Early in the period, Bianca pulled the score even with assists to Melissa and Rachael. On a power play late in the period, Bianca deflected a point shot from Holly out of the air, to take the lead. The third period started to show the long layoff and the lack of stamina by the Hawks. They could not stay with their checks in key situations. Barrie answered with 2 goals for the victory.

Exhibition Tie with North Simcoe

Mar 6th vs North Simcoe - T 1-1
The ESS Golden Hawks hosted the North Simcoe Capitals in an exhibition game before half the team takes off on holidays. Unfortunately it seemed like most of them started their holidays early. There wasn't much effort and the Hawks did not take advantage of the visitors short bench. Kayla scored midway through the first period, from in front of the net, assisted by Chelsea and Rachael. The balance of play was pretty even in the first period with both teams registering 8 shots, but it was not the usual fast paced game. Part way through the second period the position juggling started with a few defence being moved to forward, and vice versa. In addition to the unfamiliar positions, the Hawks effort dropped and North Simcoe poured it on. They tied the game early in the third period and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Golden Hawks Shutout Flames

Mar 5th vs Vaughan - W 1-0
The Golden Hawks finished out their playdown round robin against the Vaughan Flames with a 1-0 victory. Despite only posting one goal, the Hawks played with some good puck control and had some good scoring changces throughout the game. Sporting some new line combinations, the team took a little time adjusting. Once comfortable, the flow of the game picked up. Late in the first period Rachael made a beautiful backhanded pass, to an open Chelsea in the slot, who made no mistake on the goal. Kayla also earned an assist on the goal. Some other highlights offensively included a couple of instances in the 2nd and 3rd period where the Hawks controlled the play from the corner, and a couple of Bridget's slapshot blasts from the point. Alyssa earned her 22nd shutout of the season making 9 saves in the victory.

Tough Weekend - Hawks Eliminated from Playoffs

Feb 27th vs Brampton - T 1-1 (Series Tiebreaker - Shootout Loss)
The ESS Golden Hawks came ready to play their series deciding game against the Brampton Canadettes. The game was even like the rest of the series. The Hawk players were battling on every shift. The battle paid off in the second period, as Tori pushed the first goal of the game through the legs of the Brampton goalie. Penalty trouble early in the 3rd period put the Hawks down 5 against 3. That left too many Canadettes in front of the net to swat home a rebound and tie up the game. With a tie game the series remained tied, and would be settled by a series tiebreaker unique to the LLFHL. The teams would play a 5 minute overtime and shooutout to determine the winner. The Overtime solved nothing. Brampton scored on their 2nd shootout scorer, while the Hawks were blanked. The shooutout advanced Brampton to the next round.

The girls showed good sportsmanship congratulating Brampton, but also showed some emotion at the disappointment from being eliminated from the playoffs. However, the players were reminded of what a successful season it has been so far with 2 Tournament victories, advancing deep into another tournament, one more tournament to play, a second place league finish, and an overall record of 16 games over .500. Most importantly we accomplished what we said we would do, we competed hard every game.

Hawks Drop From Playdowns

Feb 26th vs Aurora - L 2-1
The Equipment Sales & Service Golden Hawks lost a must win game, against the Aurora Panthers, to stay alive in the Provincial Playdowns. While the team seemed ready to play, it was Aurora that came out of the gates strong. The Hawks were held without a shot in the 1st period. Aurora scored 2 goals in the second period to put the Golden Hawks in desperation mode. With 8 minutes left in the 3rd period, the Golden Hawks showed some good puck control, and were rewarded with a goal. Chelsea controlled the puck in the corner, fed it to Jessica in front of the net for a a shot, and Kayla scored on the rebound. Despite several chances at the end, the Hawks could not pull even.

Winless and Unbeaten in Playdowns

Feb 21st vs Aurora - T 0-0
The ESS Golden Hawks are taking the difficult route to advance to the Provincial Championships. Playing the Aurora Panthers to a 0-0 draw places the Golden Hawks with 2 points after 2 games, with draws against both opponents in the Round Robin playoff. The good news is that the Golden Hawks still control their own destiny. With wins in their next 2 qualification games, they would advance to the Provincials. In this game, the Hawks started slowly and Aurora outshot them 5-1 in the first period. The rest of the game saw the Hawks limit the Panthers chances, and swing the shot totals in the other direction. Alyssa earned her 21st shutout of the season.

Feb 14th vs Brampton - W 3-1
Playing their third game in three days, The Hawks faced possible elimination in their best of 3 series against Brampton Canadettes. The game started a little slowly but the teams heated up as the first period hit the halfway mark. Brampton battled back to tie the game in the second period after a scramble in front of the Georgina net. Kayla scored the eventual game winner, while being clobbered by the Brampton defence, by picking up Bridget's rebound shot. Madison scored the insurance goal off a face-off, assisted by Melissa and Sydney. The two teams will play the deciding game on Feb 27th to see who moves on to the third round.

Hawks Salvage a Tie in Provincial Playdown

Feb 13th vs Vaughan - T 1-1
While the League playoffs are on, the Golden Hawks are involved in Provincial Playdowns for the right to represent York Region at the Provincial Championships in April. The first game of a double round robin with Aurora and Vaughan, saw the Hawks battle for a late goal to tie the Vaughan Flames. The Golden Hawks scoring troubles continued as they could not find the back of the Flames net despite numerous scoring chances in the game. Vaughan scored in the 2nd period while on a powerplay. A shot from behind the net deflected in off a stick passed Alyssa. However the Golden Hawks went on a powerplay in the last 2 minutes of the game and pulled their goalie. They had several good scoring chances and finally capitalized with 20 seconds left in the game. Chelsea scored the goal, assisted by Sydney, and Bridget.

Golden Hawks Fall in Series 2 Opener

Feb 12th vs Brampton - L 1-0
The ESS Golden Hawks enetered their series opener against the Brampton Canadettes riding an 11 game unbeaten streak. Hopeful to continue the streak and jump out into a lead in the series, the Hawks came out strong, but did not generate a lot of shots. With 2 seconds remaining in the first period, Kayla was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. But the Brampton goalie came up big on the high blocker shot. The game was even throughout the rest of the game but Brampton notched the only goal of the game on an odd number rush late in the second period. The Hawks outshot Brampton in the third period but could not get the equalizer. The series resumes on Sunday in Brampton.

Golden Hawks Advance to Round 2

Feb 6th vs Vaughan - W 2-1
The ESS Golden Hawks advanced to the second round of the LLFHL playoffs, after completing a 2 game sweep of the Vaughan Flames. The Hawks started well but some early penalty trouble turned the momentum. Early in the 2nd period Vaughan took the lead as a scramble in front buried Alyssa. Bianca evened the score 5 minutes later with a "highlight reel" shot, assisted by Chelsea. Late in the 2nd period Madison found herself on a solo rush against 2 defenders. She drove wide and threw a backhand on net. Tori got the rebound from the directed shot and scored the go-ahead goal, with an additional assist going to Sydney. The Hawks held the lead through the third period, including a stretch of being shorthanded 2 players and the Vaughan goalie pulled for a 6 on 3 advantage. Hawks Grab Lead in Round 1 Playoff Series

Feb 5th vs Vaughan - W 2-0
The Equipment Sales & Service Golden Hawks started their league playoffs on home ice against the Vaughan Flames. The Hawks jumped on the board early as Shannon rushed from the defensive zone all the way up the ice and fired home a shot from the left boards. After that, the Flames took over the first period registering 6 of their 10 shots. They had the Hawks scrambling in their own zone but Alyssa held them off the board. The game remained 1-0 into the third period. Midway through the final period, the Hawks benefitted from a bench minor assessed to Vaughan to give them a 5 on 3 powerplay. Having a hard time generating and chances through the first 90 seconds of the powerplay, Kayla eventually tipped home a nice pass from Chelsea. The insurance marker allowed Georgina to remain agressive. The Hawks held off the Vaughan attack and Alyssa earned the shutout in the playoff opener

Regular Season Ends with a Win

Jan 30th vs Brampton - W 5-3
In the final game of the season against the Brampton Canadettes, the ESS Golden Hawks showed some very good moments and some not so good moments. The first period looked like the game would turn into a all out shootout with 5 goals in the span of just over 3 minutes. Kayla put the Hawks on the board first as she picked up Tori's rebound. But 15 seconds later Brampton got behind the Hawk defence and evened the score. The Hawks immediately regained the lead when Bridget fired from the point and caught the low corner of the net, assisted by Chelsea. Less than a minute later with the Hawks caught on a bad line change, the Canadettes tied the core again. Tori took a screen shot from out near the blue line that fooled the Brampton goalie, assisted by Rachael and Jade, to regain the lead again. The scoring slowed down as the teams played some better defence. Late in the second period Jade fired one from the right wing to to increase the lead to 4-2. But early in the 3rd period, the Hawks stopped skating in their own zone and the lead shrunk to 1 goal. To make it interesting, Brampton was awarded a penalty shot midway through the 3rd period. Remarkably, Alyssa somehow reached back to glove what appeared to be a sure goal. The Hawks got the insurance marker with 2 minutes to go. Chelsea scored, in her first game back from injury, assisted by Bianca.

Jan 23rd vs Vaughan - W 4-0
The ESS Golden Hawks continued their string of shutout hockey as the visited the Vaughan Flames and came away with a 4-0 victory. Vaughan did not show the same spunk they had in the game the previous Tuesday and the Hawks took advantage early as Bianca picked the pocket of a Vaughan player on the backcheck, turned around, skated in and fired the puck over the goalie's shoulder. It was the first of three for Bianca for her first hat trick of the season. The Hawks caried a 2-0 lead into the second and into the third period. They scored 2 more in the third period, including the final goal with only 13 seconds left in the game. Shutout Streak and Scoring Drought Continue

Jan 22nd vs Brampton - T 0-0
The Equipment Sales and Service Golden Hawks continued their streak of close games. They played host to the Brampton Canadettes, a team they hadn't played since late October. It was a tight checking game with not a lot of scoring chances for either team. When challenged, Alyssa came up big for her 6th consecutive shutout. While playing good defensive hockey in the last 6 shutout games, the team has struggled to score with only 4 goals over that stretch.

Another Close One

Jan 19th vs Vaughan - W 1-0
The ESS Golden Hawks hosted Vaughan Flames on a rare Tuesday night game. The Hawks were on fire in the first period and outshot the Flames 7-0, but could not score on the strong Vaughan goalie. Jade rang one of the goalie's mask, but it was not enough to rattle her. The second period saw the balance of play switch to the visiting team after an early Georgina penalty. The Hawks broke through 5 minutes into the third period. Rachael held the puck in at the line and walked in a fired a shot to the back of the mesh. Alyssa earned another shutout on a relatively quiet night but still some quality chances against. The girls worked hard for their victory.

Golden Hawks Pull Out a Narrow Victory

Jan 16th vs North York - W 1-0
Coming off the tournament win, but still down 2 players to injury, the ESS Golden Hawks returned to league play against the North York Storm. The game was a fast paced game with both teams showing a lot of heart and determination. The play flowed both ways throughout the game. There was a lot of intensity in front of both nets that lead to a few penalties on both sides. The second period saw North York outshoot Georgina 10-1, but the play still appeared even. With less than 3 minutes to go in the game, Jade scored the winning goal for the Hawks, just seconds after a powerplay had expired. Alyssa posted her 4th consecutive shutout and 7th in the last 10 games.

Scarborough Sharks Tournament - Champs!!!

Game 1 vs Scarborough T 2-2
The ESS Golden Hawks continued to struggle in their first game of the Scarborough Tournament. Though shorthanded, the Hawks made it easy on the host Scarborough Sharks. The Hawks played a sloppy game without much energy or confidence. The Hawks went up 1-0 midway through the first period when Chelsea stuffed home a rebound from Bridget's slapshot. But the Hawks gave up the lead in the second period when Scarborough scored 2 goals while Georgina stopped moving their feet. The third period saw the Golden Hawks on 3 powerplays, including a 5 on 3 and a 5 minute advantage. The teams' lack of confidence hurt them as they could not control the play. Fortunately with under 2 minutes left in the game, Kayla scored the equalizer, assisted by Tori. A better effort will be needed if the team hopes to advance in the tournament. Chelsea was injured and is out at least 2 weeks after a receiving dangerous hit in the defensive zone. The team wishes her a speedy recovery.

Game 2 vs Durham West T 0-0
Another game shorthand and another tie, but a much better effort. The Golden Hawks faced Durham West Lightning in the 2nd game of the tournament. Still playing with 11 skaters, the girls were asked to put in a better effort> They responded to the challenge well. They had the better of the chances in the 1st period and 3rd period. The second period belonged to the Lightning. The Hawks could not solve the Durham West goalie, but Alyssa earned another shutout to get the Hawks a key point and a chance to advance to the finals.

Game 3 vs Etobicoke T 0-0
The ESS Golden Hawks completed the tri-fecta of ties all the way to the tournament final. Their final matchup of the round robin was against the Etobicoke Dolphins. The Dolphins started strong and had the Hawks penned in their zone in the first few minutes. The Hawks started to take over midway through the first. A strong forecheck allowed the Hawks to outshoot the Dolphins 13-1 in the second period, and 19-12 overall in the game. Rachael lead the team with 6 shots. The defence of Bridget, Madison, Holly and Shannon were active in the offence all game. Melissa had an excellent opportunity late in the game but the Dolphins goalie managed a toe save. The Hawks could not notch a goal for the second straight game but felt good about the effort. Alyssa reconds back to back shutouts in the tournament.

Tournament Finals vs Durham West W 2-0
The ESS Golden Hawks faced a hard skating Durham West Lightning team in the finals of the Scarborough Sharks tournament. The Hawks had been held off the board for 2 games and needed to find a way to get on the scoresheet. Again missing a couple players with injuries, the Hawks found a way to skate with the Durham West team. Both goalies held the teams of the scoresheet until late in the first period when Jade scored after Holly placed a nice shot on net from the point. Both teams continued with strong checking games, not wanting to give the other team an edge. Early in the third period, Jade scored her second goal of the game, assisted by Kayla and Melissa. The goal was a result of a good offensive battle for the puck and a scramble in front of the Lightning net. Alyssa came up big again, posting her third shutout of the tournament and was named Game MVP by the oppostion team. Congratualtions girls on the great effort and well deserved win.

Winless Weekend after Away Defeat

Jan 3rd vs Leaside - L 3-1
The second half of the home and home series, found the ESS Golden Hawks on the losing end of the game vs Leaside Wildcats. On this night, the Wildcats wanted the game more and outplayed the Hawks for most of the game. Even the loud figure skating music was not enough to stir the Hawks, and Leaside came away with a 3-1 victory. Jade scored a goal late in the second period, assisted by Tori & Rachael, to bring the Hawks close heading into the final period. Some late pressure was turned aside by the curfew just as the Hawks were being sent to the power play

Golden Hawks League Skid Continues

Dec 19th vs North York - L 1-0
After a long break the Golden Hawks were trying to end their 2 game league losing streak, against the North York Storm. The Hawks played well in the first period but only managed 1 shot against the Storm goalie. Several opportunities were off the mark. The Georgina players did not adapt well to the smaller playing surface. They found themselves distracted by the ice surface, the other players and the happenings on the opposing bench. Unfortunately with less than 3 minutes to go, North York scored on a deflection while on a power play. Alyssa had no chance on the goal, after holding strong all game. The Hawks need to find their focus again as they head into the least month before Playoffs and Provincials

She consistently stoned the Barrie shooters and never gave up much of a rebound. Bianca, assisted by Tori and Bridget, put the Hawks up 1-0 just seconds after a Barrie penalty expired. It was a good confidence booster, as Barrie outshot Georgina 11-3 in the period. Barrie tied it up early in the second period. Georgina responded 27 seconds later on a good 2on1 passing play when Chelsea tapped home a rebound by Jessica. The second period saw another lopsided shot total, a 16-4 advantage for Barrie. Jess put the Hawks up 2-0 in the second period, with her second of the game, when she fired a hard shot on net that the goalie got a piece of but couldn't stop from entering the net (Sidenote: when asked about her scoring prowess today, she credited it to the Candy Floss she ate just prior to the game). A few minutes later, Vaughan was credited with a goal that did not appear to cross the line. Vaughan poured it on in the 3rd period and almost had the tying goal but Alyssa made a glove save that had parents from both teams in awe. Golden Hawks Drop Exhibition Tilt

Nov 18th vs North Durham - L 2-1
After 11 dayes without a game, The Equipment Sales and Service Golden Hawks travelled to Uxbridge for an exhibtion game against North Durham. The team took the opportunity to juggle lines and to try implementing some of the passing techniques they had been working on in practice. The game seemed to lack intensity despite 13 penalties in the game. Less than a minute into the game, the lack of intensity in their own zone cost the Hawks a goal. The Golden Hakws responded quickly on a power play. Rachael made a nice feed back to Jade who fired home the goal through some traffic. Midway through the 3rd period, North Durham scored the winner. The Golden Hawks had a little pressure at the end but nothing the resulted in a scoring chance or the tying goal

Hawks Shutout Mississauga Chiefs

Nov 1st vs Mississauga - W 4-0
The Equipment Sales and Service Golden Hawks hosted the Mississauga Chiefs, in their 9th league game of the season. The team was back to full strength to start the game, with the exception of Lauren's season ending injury. However as the game wore on, they were hard pressed to put together line combinations. A series of injuries forced the coaches to juggle the lines in the 3rd period. This did not stop the Hawks from posting an impressive 4-0 shutout. The teams actually battled evenly throughout the game, but the Hawks capitalized on their chances. The game remained scoreless until the final minute of the 1st period when Bianca made a solo rush down the left side to open the scoring. Tori scored the second goal about a minute later with some good pressure from the line. Assists went to Rachael and Jade. Sydney put the Hawks up 3-0,assisted by Tori and Shannon, with a nice pinch down the boards. Sydney finished the scoring, assisted by Chelsea. Alyssa played played another great game in earning her 6th shutout of the season and making 22 saves. Kayla has a confirmed broken hand and will miss 3-6 weeks.

We Will Miss you Lauren...Speedy Recovery

Oct 31st - The team learned earlier this week that Lauren will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. A follow up injury to a summer soccer injury eneded Lauren's season during the Oshawa tournament about one month ago. The team has shuffled the lines and used call ups as they waited to get back to their original lineup. Unfortunately the Bantam BB Golden Hawks will now look ahead with the lineup they have. We hope to see Lauren at games throughout the season, and have heard a rumour she may still come to the Waterloo tournament to cheer the team on. Here is hoping her a full and speedy recovery.

Scary Halloween Game

Oct 31st vs Etobicoke - T 1-1
The ESS Golden Hawks played the Etobicoke Dolphins, currently held pointless in league play. As the last time these teams met, Etobicoke played much stronger than their record. The Golden Hawks took a 1-0 lead when Tori won a face-off to Kayla who fed it back to Tori for the goal. Late in the first period, the Etobicoke Dolphins tied it up as they took advantage of a giveway at the Golden Hawk Blue line. The game lacked a lot of flow. The Hawks stopped skating and got away from their possession game in the second period. They played better in the 3rd period with applied pressure, but could not come up with the winning goal. An early 3rd period power play produced several good Golden Hawks chances, but no goal. The game ended in a 1-1 draw

Another Hard Fought Victory

Oct 25rd vs Brampton - W 3-0
The Equipment Sales Golden Hawks needed a good effort to continue their winning ways this Sunday. Still shorthanded with players away the girls came ready to play. The first period against Brampton seemed to be quite balanced as both teams traded shots and chances. Tori opened the scoring in the first, pouncing on a loose puck in the crease. Bianca earned the assist on the play. Bianca scored in the second assisted by Chelsea, and Chelsea rounded out the scoring with an empty netter late in the third. All in all a much better game was played by all as The Hawks seemed to get the better chances as the game wore on. Alyssa earned another shutout and the defense stood tall in front of her, not shying away from the rough stuff. Thanks to Erin for being a call-up on short notice.

Last Second Victory...Last 3 Seconds

Oct 23rd vs Etobicoke - W 2-1

Alyssa was sharp, easily handling most of the Etobicoke shots. The Dolphins jumped out to an early lead in the first. Georgina never threatened until Vanessa slid one under the Etobicoke goalie well into the second. Chelsea put the Hawks over the top with a heartbreaker for Etobicoke with 3 seconds left in the game. Assists in the game went to Shannon and Jade. Coaches comments stressed the importance of a stronger fore check and less turnovers from blind passes or turning away from the puck.

It looked like Emma deserved an assist after her hard forecheck lead to the Etobicoke turnover. Bianca made the game 2-0 in the first minute of the 3rd period. Season Opener Tie

Oct 9th vs North York- T 2-2
The ESS Golden Hawks hosted the the North York Storm in the season opener. The Hawks played well positionally in the first period but were not rewarded with many shots, as both teams were held off the scoreboard. Georgina took a 2two goal lead in the 2nd period on goals from Chelsea and Kayla, with assist going to Holly and Jessica. The game got a little foolish when the Hawks were assessed numerous penalties. They were able to kill off all the peanalties but still allowed the Storm to pull even. A new referee showed his inexperience as he blew his whistle before a goal, but the still awarded a goal. Despite the tie, it was a good spirited start for the team.

Oct 4th vs Vaughan- W 2-1
The ESS Golden Hawks hosted the Vaughan Flames as a final tuneup prior to the regular season starting. It was a sluggish game at times. The ice seemed slow and the play a little disorganized. The Hawks got on the board in the 2nd period of the game on a goal from Chelsea, assisted by Bianca and Rachael. The Flames tied the score midway through the 3rd period on a breakaway and would have been a penalty call against the Hawks. However Chelsea restored the lead only 20 seconds later, assisted by Jessica and Holly. The game ended in a 2-1 victory for Georgina. The shots were nearly even through the first 2 periods, but Georgina outshot Vaughan 14-3 in the final period.
